In fact, I can't say there's a significant difference in fit between this model and the new S4i II headphones, which Klipsch has redesigned with a flat cord. Rather, the differences here are the sweat-resistant design and tougher rubber moldings encasing the earpieces. The remote has bigger buttons and looks a little like those TV remotes with jumbo buttons that are marketed to seniors.
It's not quite that big, but Klipsch refers to it as an "extra-large three-button remote for easy control during outdoor activity. While the remote is fairly lightweight, it does dangle a little when you run, so it's best to use the small clip accessory to attach the headphone cord to your clothing to minimize movement of the cord and remote.
I'm not sure the remote's design is the best for runners, but it is easy to operate by feel. I'll give it that. As for additional accessories, the S4i Ruggeds come with a nice, compact carrying case. It's the same one that ships with the S4i II earphones and it's one of the better earphone cases out there because it's lightweight and compact, yet protective.
Performance In the past, we've rated the S4i headphones very highly for sound quality. Since Klipsch hasn't changed the sound profile, this model gets high marks, too, but it's worth discussing why a lot of people end up liking this line as much as they do. With earphones, one of the biggest keys to sound quality is the fit of the earphones, and the S4i models fit exceptionally well.
Again, that's partially due to the angle of the earpiece stem and the shape of the oval eartips, all of which allows you to get a very tight seal comfortably. Listening to the S4i Rugged in-ear headphones, I can't say the sound is really that much better than you get from competing models. But the sound is nicely balanced, with good detail and ample bass. They just sound pleasant and the bass response is helped by the tight seal and very good noise isolation. The Klipsch earphones do; you really get the most out of the performance they offer.
These also seem to sit a little more flush with your ears. Klipsch recommends that you download the Klipsch Control app in the Google Play Store to enable full functionality for the in-line remote, though in my testing the functionality was roughly the same either way.
Klipsch Control will show you other apps that could possibly interfere with the controls, but even with these disabled I still had problems. A single click on the single button is used to either play or pause while playing music, answer a phone call, and to mute and unmute the mic during a call. This worked fine, as did double clicking to skip the currently playing track. Clicking three times to go to the previous track did not though, re-dialing the last call I had made instead.
Instead, it opened Google Now. Both of these issues are mentioned on the Play Store page for Klipsch Control, and while the company is working to fix them, it is still a problem at the time of this writing. Using the Klipsch Image S4A to make calls did work quite well, on the other hand.
Incoming sound quality was about as clear as a phone call can be, and the quality of outgoing voice was good as well. This is one area where the included clothing clip is very handy, as it makes the quality of outgoing voice even better. The first, to judge overall quality, was through a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 audio interface, using the built-in headphone amp. Second, I listened through a Motorola Moto X, as most people will be using these with either their phone or a similar device.
For both tests, I disabled any EQ settings and listened to a variety of music. Both sets of Klipsch Image earbuds use a fairly high-powered driver, and this delivered very solid low end. These fall more on the accurate end of the spectrum, ie.
