I've made this so many times that I must give everyone my updates. First, I season the beef with whatever I have on hand onion powder, garlic powder, seasoning salt, meat magic, etc. I use canned veggies drained , and then top it with instant potatoes. I use either 4 cheese or roasted garlic! Then I top with about 1 cup of cheese any cheddar mix will do. The result is delicious AND it is sooooooo much faster!!!
Great weekday meal for the meat-and-potatoes type family! I've also made it with the brown gravy instead of the beef broth - husband did NOT like that Gravy gives it almost a beef stew texture. Update 2: I also use the bagged steamed veggies that I've become a huge fan of.
And yes, it does taste better if you use real onion and garlic.. Rating: 1 stars. As already said, this is a sort of cottage pie, as it's made with beef, however it's wrong. Sorry to be so negative, but it's an english recipe not Irish , and I've been making it for as long as I can remember.
There are better recipes to be found than this one. This recipe was fantastic! Like other's here I added a few little extra's into the mix. I also added a bug dollop of sour cream to the mashed potatoes before I spread them across the casserole Linda Cas. When I make any dinner with mashed potatoes I automaticly make way more mashed potatoes needed for that dinner, because I know I will make Shepherd's pie for dinner within two days.
I made a few changes, which my husband said was the best shepherd's pie he has every eaten. I used a can of drained peas and carrots and eliminated the 5 carrots , then I added a can of drained whole corn on top of that.
I would recommend this to anyone. Bon Appetit This recipe was very tasty. I was skeptical about not using any spices in the meat mixture as I am the type of cook who loves spices.
I did add garlic as I cannot imagine cooking without it!! Would definitely make this recipe again. Family loved it. Other than it taking a lot longer than the indicated prep time this is definitely a hit in my books!!! Thanks for the recipe. Your daily values may be higher or lower depending on your calorie needs. It was really good with some cheese sprinkled on top of the potatoes the last 15 minutes of baking. My husband has requested that I make this once a week! Thanks for the great recipe - even though I tweeked it a bit - I hardly ever stick to an original recipe, though.

Cooked an extra mins because of extra potatoes. Rating: 5 stars. Like so many other reviewers, I changed this a bit. For the filling, I used the ground beef, 2 stalks of celery chopped , half a small onion diced , a oz can of kernal corn, a can of 'shrooms, and a couple handfuls of frozen peas.
I omitted the celery soup. I did use a can of mushroom soup, plus a splash or three of milk and a few TBS of sour cream. Oh, I also used an 8" square pan for a thick pie, and it was almost overflowing - in fact, I put foil under it in the oven because the filling started to ooze around the potatoes!
Very tasty! Thanks for sharing, Sue! Maybe this will convince my husband that Shepherd's Pie isn't horrible! Best shepherd's pie ever! Only thing I did differently was I added a packet of Lipton onion soup, 1 beef boullion cube and 1 cup of water to the beef. I think it made the taste of the beef stand out a little more. I let it simmer for about 5 minutes until all the liquid was absorbed then added frozen mixed veggies and the soups. I also topped it off with an italian blend of shredded cheese the last 15 minutes of cooking.
Drain the liquid off the veggies!! I added about 2tb of worcestershire sauce and 2 cloves of crushed garlic to the meat. Whipped untill creamy.
WOW- it was great! That saucy, deeply flavourful filling , that creamy potato topping, and that awesome golden cheese crust. This is how you get your gravy fix!! To make the top beautifully golden and extra crispy, I like to drizzle with a bit of butter and parmesan. The only other thing you need is a glass of red and a crackling fire…. Cool the filling before topping with potato : It thickens and makes it easier to spread the potato across the top and it stops the potato weeping into the filling;.
When I break through the mash, I want it to be borderline collapsing, rather than being able to cut cleanly through it like cake. I stress again — these are little things that bug me, so feel free to by-pass them! PS One last time — Cottage Pie is made with beef. Hungry for more? It was so good though that we ended up eating all the leftovers :. I made this pie last night and it was delicious. My husband loved it and said it was better than any restaurant.
I added a bit too much salt when doing the final seasoning, so I added a tablespoon approx of balsamic vinegar and a tablespoon approx of red wine vinegar which toned the saltiness down nicely. I also encased the mix in puff pastry top and bottom, and served the mashed potato on the side hey, I like puff pastry. This is amazing!!!!
I followed recipe but added ingredients. I added an 8 oz can of corn with the peas. Before I put casserole in fridge I put a nice layer of cheddar cheese. This a definite favorite!
Love the looks of this recipe! You are so right in cooling the meat filling before attempting to spread on the mashed potatoes. I like to make in individual gratin dishes because spooning it out of one big dish always seems to make it look messy.
Try this one! Thankyou for all your recipes.
