While in the Dominican Republic, their bare feet must have touched the larvae of hookworm species Ancylostoma that typically inhabit the intestines of dogs and cats.
When infected dogs or cats poop because that's what they do , their poop may include hookworm eggs, which can hatch into larvae that live in moist soil or sand. Such larvae in the sand burrowed into the couple's feet and began to wriggle around, causing itchiness, swelling, rash, and blisters.
This condition is called cutaneous larva migrans, which essentially means "skin larvae moving" or "icky ick ick. The third doctor that they saw finally diagnosed their condition and recommended the medication ivermectin. C utaneous larva migrans may resolve on its own after anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. School-age children are often treated through school-health programs and preschool children and pregnant women at visits to health clinics.
Since the drugs used are safe and inexpensive or donated, entire risk groups are offered preventive treatment. Mass drug administrations are conducted periodically often annually , commonly with drug distributors who go door-to-door.
